DHADihydroxyacetone, a naturally occurring compound, also used in medicine. In cosmetics, it is responsible for the rapid appearance of brown skin color by reacting with proteins in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The pigment produced during the reaction – a melanin derivative – gives the skin a brown tint, but unlike natural melanin, it does not protect against the harmful effects of UV radiation. The skin turns brown after DHA application after approximately 2-4 hours.
