L-citrulline participates in the nitric oxide pathway. Unlike L-arginine, L-citrulline can bypass hepatic metabolism and therefore may be more effective in increasing extracellular L-arginine levels, ultimately leading to increased nitric oxide production. When combined with malate (an intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle), L-citrulline may increase the rate of ATP production, mitochondrial respiration, and muscle blood flow during physical activity. These overall physiological changes may lead to improved physical performance.
