How to use dental floss properly?
Dental floss is the key to removing food debris and plaque from places your toothbrush can't reach. Regular flossing helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Prepare the floss: Measure approximately 40-50 cm of dental floss (approximately the length of your forearm from elbow to palm). Wrap most of the floss around the middle finger of one hand and the rest around the middle finger of the other hand. Leave about 3-5 cm of floss between your fingers for use.
- Grip the floss: Use your thumbs and index fingers to grip the floss firmly, leaving a short length.
- Flossing your upper teeth: Gently slide the floss between your teeth using a "sawing" motion, avoiding harsh impacts on your gums. When the floss reaches the gumline, wrap it around the tooth in a "C" shape and gently slide it under the gum. Move the floss up and down the tooth's surface, gently scraping away plaque. Do this 8-10 times. Repeat the process for the adjacent tooth, using the same section of floss. When you reach the next interdental space, unwind the clean floss from one finger and wrap the used floss around the other so you always have a fresh section.
- Flossing the lower teeth: Use your index fingers to guide the floss between your teeth. Repeat the same C-shaped and up-and-down movements as for your upper teeth.
- Remember all your teeth: Don't forget the back surfaces of your last teeth – plaque also accumulates there.
- Rinsing: After flossing, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to remove loosened food particles and plaque.
Additional tips:
- Be gentle: Never jerk the floss – you can damage your gums.
- Daily: Floss at least once a day, preferably in the evening, before brushing.
