In Spanish, Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) means Holy Tree. It grows abundantly in South America and has been used for centuries by shamans during ritual prayers, ceremonies, and healing. It has metaphysical properties and cleanses negative energy, and the first mentions in traditions date back to the times of the Inca tribe. South American people believe that cleansing with the smoke of Palo Santo promotes a good life, brings good luck, and attracts life's opportunities. Legend has it that when the world was inhabited by a handful of people, the most virtuous of them – Cosakait – fell in love with a girl, who unfortunately did not reciprocate his feelings. The devastated man fell ill, which in turn led him to his deathbed. Before passing away, he promised to always be close to the girl he loved. Cosakait said he would decorate her head with flowers, ward off insects, and transform the water she touched with his lips into a sweet taste. A tree grew on his burial site; it had a delicate scent, and when burned, it exuded a more intense aroma. Legend has it that this was Palo Santo—a symbol of love and the longing for unrequited love. The Tobas considered the tree sacred.
