Retinal is the "big brother" of the better-known anti-aging star – retinol. While retinol requires two transformations to reach its active form – retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin), retinal is a direct precursor, requiring only one step to reach a form that skin cells understand. It's estimated that retinal can convert to retinoic acid more than 10 times more efficiently than retinol, making it a uniquely effective member of the retinoid family.
Once converted, retinal helps skin cells produce more collagen and other supportive proteins, making skin look younger, firmer, and more elastic. It also accelerates the renewal process of the upper layers of the epidermis, resulting in a smoother, more even-toned complexion.
