Chanca piedra is a small perennial plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, commonly known as "stone breaker." The plant is commonly used in Peruvian folk medicine and in home treatments for swelling and urinary tract infections. Research on chanca piedra began in the 1960s. Over 50 compounds have been identified in extracts, including alkaloids, flavonoids, lignans, and triterpenes, as well as tannins, saponins, and vitamin C. This plant has hepatoprotective properties (these properties are attributed to phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin), anti-stone, pain-relieving, hypotensive, antispasmodic, antiviral, antibacterial, diuretic, and anti-mutagenic properties.
