The term "vitamin E" encompasses a family of eight related antioxidants found in plants. Both subfamilies (tocotrienols and tocopherols) consist of alpha, beta, gamma, and delta tocopherol fractions with unique biological properties. According to a University of California study, supplementing with alpha-tocopherol alone displaces the all-important gamma-tocopherol in the body.
