Keratin is the main building block of the hair shaft, responsible for the physicochemical properties of hair as well as its appearance, condition, and quality. The most important structural part of the hair shaft, the cortex, is composed of twisted keratin fibrils bound together by cross-linked disulfide bonds. Keratin is also part of the hair's outer sheath, the condition of which is responsible for the hair's shine, smoothness, and sensitivity to various harmful external factors.
Keratin has an amino acid composition similar to human hair, which means it has a high affinity for the keratin structures of hair and is a valuable active substance with conditioning and regenerative properties. The advantage of keratin hydrolysate over other compounds with similar properties lies in its ability to penetrate deep into the hair and permanently bind to the keratin chains of the hair, improving its appearance and properties: mechanical strength, stiffness, curling, and styling.
