The Dead Sea is located in a rift valley stretching from Syria to the African continent. Some estimate the age of this formation at 60,000 years. The waters of the Jordan River and periodically flowing streams were rich in minerals. The flowing water washed away various components of the rocks and deposits of mineral ores. Intensive evaporation in the arid region led to a high salt concentration in the lake water.
The mineral composition is different from that of typical ocean water. In the sea, 97% of the salt is sodium chloride NaCl (table salt), but in the Dead Sea, it is only 8%. Dead Sea water contains 53% magnesium chloride and 37% potassium chloride. In addition, sodium, chromium, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, and others are also present in smaller amounts. In addition to chlorides, bromides, iodides, sulfates, and carbonates also occur as anions. The concentration of sulfates, SO42, is very low, while the bromide concentration in the water is the highest in the world.
